The Joffrey/Arpino Celebration

The year 2018 marks the 10th anniversary of Gerald Arpino’s passing and the 30th anniversary of Robert Joffrey’s passing. The Foundation is honoring these two renowned innovators in American dance by having organizations nationally and internationally perform their works. Performances scheduled to happen during the 2018-2019 dance season will receive a very significant reduction in the licensing fee.

The Foundation is kicking of the celebration at the USA International Ballet Competition in Jackson, MS. This year's competition is honoring Robert Joffrey, the IBC's first jury chair, and USAIBC has invited the foundation to participate in lectures, panel discussions, and master classes pertaining to Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino. The Joffrey Ballet will also be participating in the festivities and will be performing Arpino's 'Round of Angels'.  USAIBC

We hope your organization will take this opportunity to be a part of this important celebration. Please consider honoring the legacies of these two men by licensing one of their many works from the Foundation.

Gamelan, trio

The New York Dance Project is in the midst of re-staging Robert Joffrey's Gamelan. Premiered in 1963, Robert Joffrey envisioned a ballet inspired by Japanese haiku. The music composed by Lou Harrison was inspired by Indonesian Gamelan orchestra. Trinette Singleton, a former Joffrey dancer who danced in the original cast is re-staging excerpts of the ballet. The New York Dance Project, directed by Davis Robertson and Nicole Duffy Robertson bring this ballet back to life which has not been seen since 1968. Performances in NYC at the 92nd St. Y in October 2018!!

Viva Vivaldi, excerpts

Brigham Young University dancers performed, Viva Vivaldi excerpts, in February 2018. This is the second Arpino piece that they have danced.  Last year Birthday Variations was staged on them.

A comprehesive article about the staging of Vivaldi with interviews with Cameron Basden, Arpino repetiteur, and BYU Theatre Ballet dancers, can be read here.  Written by Leslie Owusu, posted Dec 19, 2017.

Rachel Cornell, a member of Theatre Ballet, is performing one of the demi-soloist roles in the number. She said, “Having the opportunity to perform an Arpino masterwork is truly a dancer’s dream come true. The history behind Arpino and his ballets are inspiring and truly humbling to be a part of as a dancer. Rehearsing for ‘Viva Vivaldi’ has been rigorous and tiring, yet very gratifying. It involves a great amount of stamina to run through the whole piece, but it is a great adventure as you take on this style of dancing within his ballet.”

Light Rain

Gerald Arpino's Light Rain will be performed June 26 & 27, 2018, by Miami's newest ballet company, Dimensions Dance Theatre of Miami. Artisitc directors, Jennifer Kronenberg and Carlos Guerra will bring their company to make their debut at NY's Joyce Theater.  The Arpino Foundation is excited that Light Rain, an iconic Arpino ballet, will be returning to NY audiences where it made its premiere at City Center in 1981.
